A Chemical Engineer, I worked for 4 years in the chemical industry before joining the Doctoral Program in Information Systems area at IIM Bangalore.  My work experience is a rich mix of Production, Design, Projects, and Technical Services.

Currently, I am studying at IIM,  Bangalore towards a doctoral degree in Quantitative Methods and Information Systems (QMIS).  My major interests lie in web-based business applications and the Organizational Information Systems, especially in how can the existing  systems be improved. I like to take an overall picture of the organization and understand from top-down route.  I am still not sure about the topic that I will be taking up for my thesis. But I guess, it could be something related to Entrepreneurship in IT industry, maybe specifically on the Web.

After spending some time in the industry, I realized that I was not utilizing my potential to its fullest.  On analysis, I figured out that I had to narrow down my specialization to the field of my major interest.  I, therefore, decided to come back to school.   A Master’s was not what I wanted at this point of time as I already had spent four years in the industry.  I wanted to do a Doctoral program which would give me an opportunity to work in the area of my interest.  The field of Information Systems to me is something I find extremely interesting for the kind of challenges it throws, for the opportunities it presents for innovation and the effect it has on the lives around me.  Therefore, an FPM in Information Systems seemed to be the best choice.

To keep up with the possibilities for research in my interest area, I have been following new economy very closely.  I am at complete ease with the new web technologies and trends.  The quest to do something different led to me to start the first venture out of IIMB.  Me and one of my MBA colleagues started this venture in February 2000.  It is the first venture to be incubated by the Rs 100 m ‘N. S. Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning” at IIMB.  I left the team in April end to concentrate on my doctoral comprehensive exam and research.  I also used to run a Management Consulting service on the Net (http://www.anuragjain.com/consult.html).

Being an FPM from IIM-B has definitely made me much more competitive and opened up a flood of opportunities.

Being from a business background, entrepreneurship is something that excites me.  And that's why I have been trying to link my research to this topic, esp. to hi-tech entrepreneurship.
