#My Research                                                                                                                        Top

I have looked at a variety of topics for my research before settling down on current one, which is: Strategic Role of Information Systems Leadership in Organizations: An Investigation in Indian Context.

In the journey to this topic, I sojourned at various junctions ranging from e-governance to entrepreneurship .  In fact, all things new-economy (?) interest me a lot.  I have been following new economy very closely.  (, (Also, I was the co-founder of the first venture ever from and incubated by IIM Bangalore).  I am at complete ease with the new web technologies and trends.

Some of the topics that I looked at, before coming to a screeching halt at the current topic:

  • Entrepreneurship in IT
  • E-governance
  • Geographical/Regional factors in development of hi-tech entrepreneurship. For example, why is Silicon Valley, Israel, or Bangalore so successful in IT growth.
  • Innovation by Indian IT start-ups – original vs. derivative work.  Are Indian IT start-ups just sweatshops or innovation powerhouses?
  • Hi-tech entrepreneurship vs. traditional industrial entrepreneurship: What are the differences?
  • Has hi-tech industry brought about a paradigm shift in Entrepreneurship?
  • Infrastructure index of an economy for hi-tech Entrepreneurial Development.
Being from a business background, entrepreneurship is something that excites me.  And that's why I had been trying to link my research to this topic, esp. to hi-tech entrepreneurship.  Some activities in Entrepreneurship field:

#IS research as a discipline                                                                                               Top

Information Systems is relatively a new area when compared to other more traditional management areas such as Finance, Marketing etc.  The opportunities and challenges, therefore, and hence excitement of doing research, are much more.

The discipline of MIS started somewhere in mid-60s.  But in the beginning, the boundaries between Computer science and MIS were quite blurred and MIS' had a tough time finding an identity for itself.

MIS discipline got a big philip in 1977 when MIS Quarterly published its inaugural issue.  And then in December 1980, first International conference on Information Systems was held.

A brief timeline of MIS Discipline:
Mid-60s : Evolution of MIS as a separate discipline.
1977     : Inaugural issue of MIS Quarterly.
1980     : First International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) held.
1980s    : Focus of IS research shifts from 'what-to-study' to 'how-to-study'.
1984     : Harvad Business School's 75th Anniversary Research Colloquium.
1984:    : European IS Research meet at Manchester.
1989     : Harvad Business School's Research Colloquium on Qualitative Research.
1989     : Harvad Business School's Research Colloquium on Experimental Research.
1990     : European IS Research meet at Copenhegen.
1991     : Harvad Business School's Research Colloquium on Survey Research.
