Saharanpur is a nice small city in western Indian state of UP.  Four hours (by rail/road) from Delhi, its famous for intricately designed wood-craft items.  The merchandise is exported all over the world!  With the creation of Haridwar as a separate disctrict in late 80s, it lost not only Haridwar from its district map, it also lost university town of Roorkee to Haridwar.  Earlier bordering only the state of Haryana, now after the creation of new state of Uttaranchal (2001), it borders these two states.  Saharanpur hosts educational institutions like Institute of Paper Technology (IIT Roorkee) and industrial orgnaizations like Star Paper Mills and ITC. Its also known for organizing the Saharanpur International Chess competition.
